Application Instructions

Please read these instructions carefully and gather the information needed to complete the application. Since you cannot save and return to the application form, all of your information must be entered during one online session. Only completed applications will be considered.

There are five sections for the UPRIME Award application:

  1. Demographics
  2. Academics
  3. Statements
  4. Research Interest
  5. Letters of Recommendation and Signature
  • Your information is to be entered online, Link below. Gathering your information in advance will allow you to make your application as complete as possible.
  • You must complete each prompt or section, otherwise you cannot proceed to the next section.
  • Once you have submitted your application, no changes can be made.

  • Your full legal name (First, Middle, Last)
  • Date of birth (mm/dd/yyyy)
  • Your valid University of Minnesota or other email address
  • Your current gender identity (e.g. female, male, trans-, non-binary, other, prefer not to answer)
  • Your preferred pronouns (e.g. she/her/hers, they/them)
  • Languages that you speak, including English. You must indicate as least one language.
  • First Generation: Are you one of the first in your family to attend college or university?
  • Childhood City, State, and Country: Where you spent the most time as a child growing up.
  • Family Income Level
  • Disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act
  • U.S. Veteran status.
  • School, College, or University. You must be a currently enrolled student at a recognized accredited institution.
  • Your major.
  • Your minor. Leave blank if none.
  • Your year in school (Sophomore, Junior or Senior) at the time of application.
  • Overall Grade Point Average (GPA). Please use the 4.0 scale. Include only the courses that you have completed.
  • Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math (BCPM) GPA. Please use the 4.0 scale. Include only the science courses, including physiology if applicable, that you have completed.

A. Personal Narrative or Statement - Your personal narrative or statement should address the following:

  • Your relevant background - academic, personal, and service
  • Your career goals, i.e. your interest in pursuing graduate or professional-level work in a specific discipline/area
  • The science questions that interest you most and the reason(s) for your interest(s).
  • The specific areas in which you would like to conduct research and the factors that influenced the development of those interests.
  • Your interest in participating in UPRIME at the University of Minnesota.  Maximum Character Limit: 3000

NOTE: You must compose your Personal Narrative or Statement in your word processor and then copy and paste your narrative or statement in the box provided.

B. Diversity Statement
The long-term success of scientific research enterprise in our country is critically dependent on the development of a diverse workforce. Essential to the creation of a diverse scientific research community is the recruitment into educational and training programs of individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, racial and ethnic minorities, and others who are underrepresented in biomedical research (e.g. individuals with disabilities). Please utilize the space provided below to indicate how your unique life experiences will allow your participation in UPRIME and to contribute to a diverse research workforce in the future. Maximum Character Limit: 3000

NOTE: You must compose your Diversity Statement in your word processor and then copy and paste your narrative or statement in the box provided.

If you are not currently engaged in research with an IBP faculty member, please include the following:

  • Topic area: A general description of the area of physiology to be investigated.
  • Research question: A specific question (hypothesis) that you are interested in testing.

If you are currently engaged in research with an IBP faculty member and plan to continue that work during your UPRIME fellowship in addition to identifying the topic area and research question, please include the following:

  • Specific Aims: A maximum of two specific aims are allowed. These should include experimental approaches and design.
  • Expected Results: What your data will look like.

B.   Previous Research Experience – Provide a description of any previous laboratory-based research experience.  Include aims of previous projects and the techniques you used to investigate those aims during those projects.

C.  Desired research advisor(s) name. Please review the faculty research mentors on our website and provide us with the name or names of your preferred research mentor.  Note: For this program the research mentors must be chosen from University of Minnesota Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology faculty.

NOTE: You must compose your Research Interests in your word processor and then copy and paste the answer into the box provided.

  • Letter of Recommendation: You must provide the names and email addresses of two recommenders. One of them can be your research advisor.
  • Signature: By signing and submitting this application you certify that the information you have provided in this application is truthful and to the best of your knowledge.
  • Contact your recommender to send the letter directly to [email protected] with the subject line to include your name and 'UPRIME'.

When you have completed your application, click submit. You may apply only once.
